10X Thinking in Goal Setting

Monday Musing: Imagine setting goals so audacious they make your heart race with excitement.

Last week, our Emergent team gathered for some incredibly energising mid-year celebrations and strategy work. Face-to-face interactions are unrivaled in their ability to reignite our collective passion and drive. This one also revealed how terrible I am at bowling…🙃

We kicked off by reflecting on our achievements and lessons learned as a precursor to turning our attention to what’s next. Then, I shared a video to get our minds buzzing about 10X thinking in goal setting – the idea of stretching our goals tenfold.

What is 10X thinking?

Popularised by former CEO and co-founder of Google, Larry Page, 10X thinking is about aiming for exponential, not incremental, improvements. I’d seen Jen Allum, a VP at the Moonshot factory present on the concept a couple of weeks ago and found it to be a great frame for pushing beyond traditional thinking that stometimes limit us to small, safe steps.

Why is 10X thinking in goal setting powerful?

10X thinking breaks those constraints, asking, “What would this look like if we aimed ten times higher?”. It’s about setting, not just goals, but what I like to call BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals).

How can you use 10X thinking in goal setting?

1. Start by defining your 10X goals. What do you want to achieve in your life or business? What are your wildest dreams? Once you know what you want, you can start to develop a plan to achieve it.

2. Break your goals down into smaller, more manageable steps. This will make them seem less daunting and more achievable.

3. Focus on taking action. Don’t just sit around and dream about your goals. Take action every day to move closer to them. 10X results will require exceptional effort.

4. Be willing to fail. Failure is a natural part of the 10X process. Don’t let it discourage you. Learn from your mistakes and pivot and adapt accordingly. We spoke as a team about the difference between falling short of a 10X goal vs achieving a 2X one and how we needed to see the former as a ‘win’ that could be built upon.

Take charge of your Monday.
