Love Mondays 144: The Perks of Real-World Connections!
Say Hello IRL: The Perks of Real-World Connections!
Issue 144 – May 27 2024
“The real crucial link in the international exchange is the last three feet, which is bridged by personal contact, one person talking to another.”
– Edward R. Murrow, renowned journalist and head of the U.S. Information Agency in the 1960s
Monday Musing: How can we strike a balance between the convenience of technology and the richness of personal connections?
I heard the above quote at the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Fulbright program the other week, and it really struck me as an eloquently put reminder of the power of relationships.
While Murrow’s world was diplomacy during the Cold War, it strikes me that his quote is worth re-reminding ourselves of in an age where technologically-powered communications is increasingly replacing in-person.
The way I read Murrow’s quote is that human relationships count for more than any amount of well-crafted strategy or compelling argument. Even money has its limits. I know multiple founders, for example, refuse extraordinary offers for their company simply because they didn’t like the person on the other side of the table.
As we get locked into online echo chambers, or transfer more and more of our interactions to entirely virtual, the muscle of being able to build relationships (particularly with people who are different to us) starts to atrophy. While tech can streamline processes, enhance productivity, and provide incredible insights, it can’t replace the human element.
Let’s not miss the magic of the last three-feet. It’s not just about the action, but the intentionality—bringing energy, eye contact, and engaged body language to make those final three feet truly powerful.
And if you can’t connect in-person, pick up the phone or set up a video call! One study found that hearing someone’s voice makes a big difference. Voice-based interactions (like phone calls and video chats) were found to be more effective in creating strong social bonds compared to text-based interactions (like emails and texts).
Study participants expected phone calls to be awkward, but those who called felt happier and closer to their person than those who emailed. This was true whether it was for friends or strangers. It’s often the thought, not the act, that’s uncomfortable. So, go ahead—make that call!
