Love Mondays 131: How to flip imposter syndrome

Monday Musing:

Imagine looking in a mirror and seeing the strengths others see in you.

Adam Grant quote - Love Mondays with Holly Ransom

Ever found yourself caught in the clutches of self-doubt, thinking, “I don’t know what I’m doing. It’s only a matter of time before they find out”? If so, welcome to the club. It sounds like you might be experiencing the classic imposter syndrome—a common struggle up to 82% of people have faced.

Last week, I had the privilege of moderating the first Australian tour of renowned organisational psychologist and my good friend, Adam Grant. In addition to journeying through Adam’s back catalogue of 5 (!!) New York Times bestsellers, we spent a lot of time exploring his new book, ‘Hidden Potential’ – a book I devoured and highly recommend. In our conversation, Adam shared a potent antidote to this pervasive self-doubt: embracing a growth mindset.

Instead of succumbing to the stifling thought of, “I don’t know what I’m doing,” try adopting a growth mindset perspective—flip the script and say to yourself, “I don’t know what I’m doing yet, but it’s only a matter of time before I figure it out.” It’s a subtle shift that can make a world of difference.

During our chat, Adam candidly revealed, “Everything I’ve accomplished now, I started as terrible at!” It’s a powerful reminder that expertise isn’t a birthright; everyone begins somewhere, usually far from expertise. What truly matters is your journey of growth and learning, and by that I mean your conviction and commitment to it.

So, if you’ve ever felt the weight of imposter syndrome, know you’re not alone. Embrace a growth mindset, and watch your potential unfold in ways you never thought possible!
